WELCOME

I believe that becoming a mother is a time of powerful transition and change.

But I also believe that we have forgotten how to support, care for and empower women as we go through this rite of passage.

Redefining motherhood

Nua means new in Irish. It is a name which derives from the word ‘rest’ in Hebrew. It means naked in Portuguese.

With NuaNua I wanted to create a space for women as we navigate our transition into motherhood.

A space that draws on the wisdom of the women who have gone before us, but translated for the world we live in today.

An ark in an ever changing world. A place to rest, be vulnerable, join together and then rise.

Hi, I’m Layla.

As a mum of three, I know what it feels like to be supported in those early days and weeks after birth. And I know what it feels like to be left to work it all out on your own.

I know how isolating, overwhelming and frustrating motherhood can be. What a shock it can be and how radical the identity shift we go through can feel.

It was with the birth of my third baby that everything cracked open for me. I couldn’t deny the feelings, the overwhelm, the frustration any more.

I searched for answers, following a crumb trail that took me back to study the traditions of Chinese medicine and retrain as a Five Element Acupuncturist, to train with an Ayurvedic postpartum doula and learn of cultural practices and rituals of motherhood around the world. I moved back to my native Ireland and started to reconnect with the land.

But for me there was still a piece of the puzzle missing. I struggled daily with a divide between wanting to be a ‘good mother’ and a ‘successful woman’. And I felt I was failing at both.

After nearly 10 years of struggling with this, I discovered the game-changing word Matrescence, the rite of passage that every woman goes through when she becomes a woman.

I believe supporting women through this transition is the start of a revolution in terms of how we frame our experiences as women, mothers or not.

I believe that if we can weave newborn mothers a safety net after birth AND give women the words with which to understand this massive transition, the ripple effect out will truly change the world. Because the tools and skills and powers that we develop as mothers, are the skills and powers the world needs right now as well.

Meet your guide

Who am i?

Hi, I’m Layla!

I still felt like I had been somehow split in two after becoming a mother. I struggled daily with a divide between wanting to be a ‘good mother’ and a ‘successful woman’. And I felt I was failing at both.

After nearly 10 years of struggling with this, I discovered the work of Dr Aurelie Athan and Amy Taylor-Kabbaz on the game-changing word Matrescence.

I learnt that Matrescence can be compared to another rite of passage we all traverse: adolescence. Matrescence too affects us all differently, it takes time, it involves the shedding off of parts of us and the making other parts of us anew. It also requires support, space and grace to navigate.
