Retreat or Isolation?

Whether you are pregnant or a new mum, we take a look at how to put a different spin on self-isolation and turn it in to a beneficial period of preparation, rest and recovery!

 

I’m quite sure none of you reading this ever imagined that this is how you would be spending your pregnancy, or your early days of motherhood. No matter where you are in the world, this world-altering pandemic has changed everything. All bets are off.

And I’m also guessing that this might be quite a stress-inducing time for you as well. Jobs lost, family and friends having to staying away, perhaps you are confined to your apartment. The level of fear and uncertainty around us is also unprecedented.

All of this is why I wanted to launch NuaNua as quickly as I could, why I changed all the time lines and release dates and why I’ve been working night and day to be able to share with you all I know.

Because there is a silver lining to all of this.

Long before any of us had ever heard of Covid-19, I started to create NuaNua as a way to share with the mums to be and new mums of the world the insights I’ve been gathering over many years of training as a Chinese Medicine practitioner, a postpartum doula and (my biggest qualification!) giving birth to three kids. To share with you all the untold benefits of a supported retreat for 40 days after birth.

I’m sure many of you are finding self isolation a challenge.

But what if I told you that it is now scientifically proven that a supported period of retreat, rest and recovery after birth improves your chances of breastfeeding, protects you mental health, ensures you heal faster, helps you to bond with your baby better and is a massive investment in the next 40-50 years of your life, including increasing your chances of having reduced symptoms during menopause?

What if I told you that for thousands of years, cultures around the world have been encouraging (and sometimes downright insisting!) that new mothers retreat for 40 days after birth as way to recover and acclimatise to this new normal?

What if I told you that I retreated, or essentially self-isolated, for 40 days after the birth of my first two children, but did not after the birth of my third? And that on a physical, mental and emotional level the difference I noticed was profound.

What if I told you that if you are pregnant and self isolating there are so many incredibly beneficial things you can be preparing for yourself for after birth. What if I told you that many postpartum professionals say that your third trimester is really all about preparing for your fourth!

I hope to launch the NuaNua Postpartum Fieldguide in the coming weeks so that you can access all of the tools and approaches I have created for this precious time. But, like you, I am self isolating at the moment. At home. With three kids. A husband. Two cats. And a puppy on the way! So things are taking a little bit more time.

So in the meantime, I am jumping in the deep end, launching the website, putting out as many blog posts as I can, hopping on to Instagram and facebook to bring you as many tips and insights as I can. Because I really do believe that there is a silver lining to all of this for so many pregnant women and mums to be out there like you.

During these crazy days I really want to be there by your side to help you to Learn to Nurture Your Newborn Self.
